Newsletters are an easy way to update employees about what's happening in IT, while also providing user awareness information. I normally include some sort of information security stuff somewhere within the publication. After days of nothing but logic, programming, design, and meetings, it's nice to be able to pick a technical topic to research and write about.
Another benefit of newsletters is personal and departmental branding. Our IT department has its own mission statement "To proactively contribute to the company's success" and logo, which helps with recognition to the corporate owners.
